We are excited to announce the appointment of Geoff Benton as the new Historic Site Manager at Clermont State Historic Site!
Geoff, a lifelong resident of the area, brings a deep connection to the site and a wealth of experience to this important role. A descendant of Conrad Lasher Jr., who was requested by Margaret Beekman Livingston to help rebuild Clermont’s house after it was burned during the American Revolution, Geoff’s ties to the site span generations. Growing up nearby, he spent time at Clermont as a child and has been a valued member of the team since 2016.
In his new role, Geoff is dedicated to ensuring that Clermont is for everyone. Whether visitors come to explore the historic house, engage with the exhibits in the Visitor Center, or simply enjoy the beautiful grounds and views, Geoff emphasizes that there is something for everyone to experience and appreciate. His commitment to inclusivity is reflected in his leadership of the Our Whole History Initiative, which seeks to highlight the stories of all those who lived and worked at Clermont—enslaved people, Indigenous communities, women, men, and many others—ensuring that everyone’s story is told and remembered.
Geoff holds a B.A. from SUNY Potsdam and an M.A. from SUNY Albany, where he was fortunate to study under the renowned Sung Bok Kim. With 19 years of experience in the museum field, Geoff’s expertise and passion for history make him a perfect fit for this role.
Outside of his professional work, Geoff resides in the area with his wife and two children, all of whom are active volunteers in the community. We are thrilled to have Geoff leading the charge in preserving and sharing the rich history of Clermont with all who visit.
