Upstate Films has a new addition to our family of venues. In addition to the Starr Cinema (Rhinebeck, founded 1972), the Orpheum Theatre (Saugerties, founded 1908), and our traveling cinema-in-a-van Hudson Valley Picture Show, we’ll be opening Upstate Midtown.
Upstate Midtown, an intimate venue with 42 seats, is located at 591 Broadway, two doors south of the Ulster Performing Arts Center, in a former barber shop. It’s an experiment: can a vacant storefront be converted into a vibrant gathering place for a neighborhood and city? It’s the first movie theater in the city limits in more than 40 years.
The screening room’s grand opening weekend schedule is as follows:
Friday, Sept. 19 4:30 pm Orwell: 2+2=5: a sneak peek of a new film by the Oscar-nominated director Raoul Peck (I Am Not Your Negro) 7:15 pm A Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror: a sneak peek at a new documentary 9:30 pm: Linda Linda Linda: a joyous Japanese film, rarely seen in the U.S., celebrating a teenage girls’ band
Saturday, Sept. 20 3:30 pm A Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror
Sunday, Sept. 21 5:15 pm A Strange Journey: The Story of Rocky Horror 7:30 pm Kingston Film Foundation presents: All About My Mother: the Oscar-winning drama by Spanish auteur Pedro Almodovar, featuring Penelope Cruz Wednesday, Sept. 24 6 pm Kingston Film Foundation reception 7 pm Kingston Film Foundation presents: All About My Mother
Thursday, Sept. 25 6:30 pm A Hispanic Heritage Month celebration, presented by Hudsy: Meat Wagon + Munay Wasi + Olympic Dreams, with director Angel Gates in person 8:45 pm One Battle After Another
Ticket prices are $7 for Upstate Films members, students and current and former military; $11 general admission.
Free events will be ticketed at $1, with some seats available at showtime. Tickets can be purchased at upstatefilms.org
Upstate Films has imagined Upstate Midtown as a flexible, community-friendly gathering space, accessible to all. The program features regular screenings of award-winning and popular films, classic titles presented by the Kingston Film Foundation and a rotation of events co-created by a family of Kingston-based organizations. Confirmed partner organizations include Hudsy, the Center for Continuing Education, D.R.A.W., the Woodstock Film Festival and Radio Kingston. The intention is to build the small venue into an indispensable space that will serve the neighborhood, which has a rich history, a diverse population and a vibrant arts, culture and restaurant scene.
“We are thrilled that Upstate Films, one of the region’s most beloved arts organizations, is becoming part of the Midtown Arts District,” said Kingston Mayor Steve Noble. “The neighborhood is becoming one of our region’s most exciting places to be, one that integrates its rich history with new ideas. We believe the many long-time and new businesses will benefit from Upstate Midtown, and we are sure Kingston residents will enjoy this new theater.”
“We’ve been dreaming of a theater in Kingston for years—it’s a city that’s very alive and very much needing more places to gather,” said Paul Sturtz, co-Executive Director of Upstate Films. “Upstate Midtown might not be the movie palace we were first imagining, but in some ways it’s even better – it’s intimate and low-key and perfectly situated to become a center of activity and resource for the community and the region.” |
