A listening party, reception and film screening to celebrate the human spirit and share election-season information
Proceeds benefit Play for the Vote and League of Women Voters
A coalition of organizations have joined forces to share information about the 2024 election through an event at the Orpheum Theatre, Saugerties, NY, on October 5.
The event, Women Ascending, features a listening party featuring Laurie Anderson’s new album Amelia, played in Atmos surround sound and hosted by Anderson; a reception featuring Hudson Valley specialties; a performance by the legendary violist Martha Mooke; and a screening of Mountain Queen, Lucy Walker’s thrilling documentary about the Nepalese mountain climber Lhakpa Sherpa.
In addition to the in-person events, the Amelia Listening Party will be streamed live on YouTube, with donations suggested for Play for the Vote and League of Women Voters.

The event is produced by the Women Ascending committee, Play for the Vote, Upstate Films and the League of Women Voters, with support from Netflix.

Amelia: A Listening Party with Laurie Anderson
Preceded by a presentation from Play for the Vote
Laurie Anderson’s first new album since 2018’s Grammy-winning Landfall comprises 22 tracks about renowned female aviator Amelia Earhart’s tragic last flight. Anderson wrote the music and lyrics. She is joined on the album by Filharmonie Brno, conducted by Dennis Russell Davies, and Anohni, Gabriel Cabezas, Rob Moose, Ryan Kelly, Martha Mooke, Marc Ribot, Tony Scherr, Nadia Sirota, and Kenny Wolleson. Presented in Dolby Atmos immersive sound. Introduced by Play for the Vote and Laurie Anderson and followed by a Q&A with Laurie.

Lhakpa Sherpa’s life straddles two wildly disparate worlds: as an immigrant dishwasher in Connecticut, and as a boundary-breaking mountaineer. Lucy Walker, the Oscar-nominated director of The Waste Land and The Crash Reel, follows Lhakpa, who was once forced to conceal her gender to pursue the sport she loves, as she sets out to prepare for her record tenth summit of Mount Everest. With a performance from the acclaimed violist Martha Mooke and a presentation by the League of Women Voters and followed by a Q&A with Lucy Walker and Lhakpa Sherpa, moderated by Kit Fitzgerald.
Bios
Laurie Anderson is one of America’s most renowned and daring creative pioneers. Known primarily for her multimedia presentations, she has cast herself in roles as visual artist, composer, poet, photographer, filmmaker, electronics whiz, vocalist, and instrumentalist.
Lucy Walker, an Emmy-winning, twice Oscar-nominated director who has won more than 100 awards for films including Bring Your Own Brigade, The Lion’s Mouth Opens, The Crash Reel, The Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom, Waste Land, Countdown to Zero, Blindsight, and Devil’s Playground.
Martha Mooke is a Grammy Award-winning, violist/composer known for her innovative educational programs and founder of the Scorchio Quartet (resident ensemble of Tibet House Benefit Concerts at Carnegie Hall produced by Philip Glass and Laurie Anderson.) She has performed and recorded with David Bowie, Barbra Streisand, Trey Anastasio, and is featured on Laurie Anderson’s Amelia.
Lhakpa Sherpa is a Nepali Sherpa mountain climber. She has climbed Mount Everest ten times, the most of any woman in the world. Her record-breaking tenth climb was on May 12, 2022, which she financed via a crowd-funding campaign. In 2000, she became the first Nepali woman to climb and descend Everest successfully.
