A contemporary one-man show written and performed by Joe Baer tells the story of Samuel Clemens’s life. Context and words from the pen of Mark Twain are intertwined to reimagine this legend on the lecture circuit, highlighting the ebbs and flows of this American iconic figure’s life against a visual backdrop of historical imagery.
Rhinecliff, NY. Baerhands Theater is pleased to announce that its latest version of the solo show, Samuel Clemens: Tales of Mark Twain will be performed for two days only, Saturday, October 25 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, October 26 at 2 p.m. at Morton Memorial Library in Rhinecliff. The shows benefit Morton Memorial Library and Rhinebeck Grange #896.
The show, written and performed by Joe Baer has been touring the Hudson Valley for the past five years, including performances Off-Broadway at the Actors Temple Theatre (NYC), The Linda (Albany), The Main Stage at Shadowlands (Ellenville) and the Stissing Center (Pine Plains) among others. Baer has been awarded five TANYS awards for his performance including the 2022 TANYS Festival Adjudicators’ Discretionary Award for Excellence in Overall Production and Festival People’s Choice Award for his portrayal as Samuel Clemens.
Baerhands Theater productions emphasize the focus on historical narratives and figures who have left a significant mark through their lives and work. Says Baer, “In researching the characters for my shows, I find inspiration derived from life experiences. What makes a Baerhands production unique is its ability to combine historic context with the life of a character, often incorporating direct quotes or literary excerpts. My goal is to provides a rich, immersive experience for the audience.” He adds, “The shows are designed for small, intimate audiences, making them ideal for fund-raising events like this one for the Morton Library and Rhinebeck Grange. I focus on high-quality experiences rather than large-scale commercial productions.” Baer recently performed at the Great Camp Sagamore in the Adirondacks as part of a Party Like A Vanderbuilt Weekend. He is currently working on a new production about the life of P.T. Barnum.
The Twain one-man show is an original script sprinkled with excepts from the hand of Samuel Clemens otherwise known as Mark Twain. Baer portrays Samuel Clemens near the end of his career, in a narrative and thought-provoking performance. The show parallels events in Twain’s life with events happening during his lifetime in American history. Baer’s performance vividly portrays Twain’s humor and wit as well as his irreverence for politics and politicians. This latest version runs about 90 minutes. This is no intermission.
