This September concert is the fourth in the new partnership between the Roger Phillips Concert Committee and Starr Library. The fifth and final concert of this season will be held October 19–hopefully outdoors–with the big band group, Sass & Brass.
The program will feature the following pieces:
Heitor Villa Lobos (1887-1959) – Assobio a Jato “Jet Whistle” (1950) for flute and cello: mvt 1 [Eliza and Andres]
Christoph Willibald Gluck (1714-1787) – Menuet and Dance of the Blessed Spirits, from Orphee et Eurydice, arr. by Eliza Karpiak for flute, viola, cello [Eliza, Fredrick, Andres]
J.S. Bach (1685-1750) – Solo Cello Suite #3: Prelude, Sarabande, Gigue [Andres]
Franz Schubert (1797-1828) – String Trio Bb major (D471): mvt 1 [Eliza, Fredrick, Andres]
Sam Mutter (b. 2002) – “Miniatures” for flute, viola, cello (2023) [Eliza, Fredrick, Andres]
About the Musicians:
Fredrick Lameck Otieno is a second year Conservatory student in the double-degree program. He grew up in Korogocho, one of the largest slums on the edge of Nairobi, Kenya and is the only one of his nine siblings to go beyond secondary school He started his musical journey studying viola and violin in the Ghetto Classics Program, a Kenyan organization that teaches music to children from poverty in the belief that music can be a gateway to a better life. While at Bard, Fredrick has continued to offer on-line lessons to Kenyan children in the Ghetto Classics Program. Earlier this year he and three other Bard Consevatory students, received a Davis Peace Prize grant to develop a Music Mentorship program to offer music lessons to children in Korogocho and to establish a creative partnership between Bard and the Ghetto Classics Program.
Eliza Karpiak is a fourth-year student from Pennsylvania where she was a member of Philadelphia Young Artists and Philadelphia Youth orchestras.
Andrés Pérez Rangel is a fourth-year Conservatory student double-majoring in violin and cello performance and in computer science. Andres started his musical studies in Venezuela, his home country, were he was part of El Sistema program. At Bard, he is part of Raman Ramakrishnan’s cello studio.
